Hugh Stewart was born in Hamilton, Ontario April 25, 1937 and died in Mississauga Hospital on March 14, 2015 in the loving arms of his most cherished, caring and beloved wife of 31 years, Anne Clark-Stewart UE. A funny man, the kindest and most caring man, a man larger than life, a quintessential storyteller, a family man, he was the loving father of Cam (suegro to Marina), Lisa (fiance Eddie Wright) all of Calgary and stepfather of Kurt Weckwerth UE and Lynn (Kanata). Loving and adored grandfather of Tim Stewart, Noel Stewart, Karen Sanchez-Stewart, Jessica Thorne (Miles), Connie Haider (Farooq), Jason Smith and Ivania Venegas, all of Calgary and Eric Weckwerth UE and Megan Weckwerth UE of Kanata. Wonderful great-grandfather to Izabelle and Valentina Sanchez-Stewart, Kingston Venegas Smith, Max Thorne and Adam Haider all of Calgary. Special “Rotary Dad” to Soren(Austria), Jorge(Bolivia), Satoko(Japan), Karoline (Denmark), Rafael(Brazil), Brunna(Brazil), Corinna(Germany) and Sonia(France). Survived by his sister Mary (Vic Coomber) of Mount Hope, David Stewart (Barbara) of Grimsby, sister-in-law June Stewart of Burlington, Ed Stewart (the late Ann) (Oakville) and his brothers-in-law Peter Clark (Nenita) and Ian Clark, sister-in-law Christine (Cal Martell) and mother-in-law, Irene Clark, all of Ottawa. Also survived by Anne’s loving sister-in-law, Linda (Marty Phillion) of Smiths Falls and their family. Hugh was beloved and admired by his many cousins, nephews and nieces and their families as well as Anne’s large family of nieces, nephews and cousins around the world. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, George Stewart and Hilda Lockley of Hamilton, his elder brothers Bill (1944) of Hamilton and Jim (2005) of Haliburton, as well as his kind and loving father-in-law John Clark UE (2010) of Ottawa.

Hugh worked for over 40 years in a number of marketing-related fields including co-founder and President of Stewart/Downie Public Relations & Advertising and subsidiary PR/Productions, the management of Government of Canada special projects e.g. the Manitoba Centennial Caravan and the Federal Identity Program, co-founder and secretary of the Association of Corporate Identity Managers of Canada, served on the Consumer & Corporate Affairs task force examining wage and price controls that led to the federal Anti-Inflation Program, managed the visual identity of the Anti-Inflation Program, co-founder and President, Market Reach Expositions Inc. and so much more. His many friends of lifetime from grade school, cubs, scouts and in business were still in touch and will miss his professional leadership, attention to detail, honour and kindness.

Hugh was happy when he was helping others through Rotary International (RI) as Club President, Assistant Governor (7080), District Fellowship Chair, prime on the Mississauga Rotary Clubs’ Rotary International Centennial project (the design and construction of Canada’s first Cancer Survivors Park, for which he helped raise over US$1M.). Worked with a committee of neighbours to achieve Provincial Designated Heritage District of the Olde Village of Port Credit; volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society as van driver and manager; building committee member and fundraising chair, new ministry building, Church of St. George the Martyr, Toronto; Commodore, Rotary Yachting Fellowship (raised over $100K for boats for disabled sailors, prime for the Annual Easter Seal Kids Cruise sponsored by Rotary Clubs of Mississauga/IYFR/Port Credit Yacht Club); appointed to the Executive of Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branch 638 Poppy Fund Administration Committee.

Rotarians, acquaintances and people in the streets of the cities we visited will always remember being made “Honourary Canadians” by Hugh in his own special style with Canada Flag pins, that made them think this was a particular Canadian honour. Hugh’s last project was researching and reporting on the definitive designer of our Canadian Flag, Jacques Saint-Cyr, of the Canadian Government Exhibition Commission.

For his service to his community, Hugh was awarded a Rotary International (RI) Paul Harris Fellowship (1999), Federal, Provincial and Civic Awards of Recognition for Volunteerism, Mississauga Civic Award of Recognition (2000), Mississauga Citizen of the Year (2007), Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2012), Naval Officers’ Association of Canada’s (NOAC) Certificate of Appreciation. Hugh was also a Benefactor to Rotary International and a donor to the RI Foundation.

Hugh was a member of Credit River PROBUS Club, HMCS Athabaskan GO7 Association, Naval Officers Association of Canada, Port Credit Yacht Club, Royal Canadian Legion and the Sea Cadet Old Buoys Association.

In lieu of flowers, Hugh has requested donations to the Rotary International Foundation of Canada; the Patient Transportation Program of the Canadian Cancer Society-Mississauga Unit; Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, Port Credit Branch 82; or the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga Hospital. The family thank the surgical team and the staff in ER, CCU, ICU and Surgical Unit B of Mississauga Hospital for their compassionate and loving care of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A tree will be planted as a living memorial as part of the Mississauga onemilliontrees.ca project.

Visitation will be held at Skinner and Middlebrook, 128 Lakeshore Road East, Mississauga on Friday, March 20th from 2-4 and 6-8 with a brief Legion Ceremony of Remembrance at 7:00pm. A Celebration of Thanksgiving will be held on Saturday, March 21st at 1:00pm at Trinity Anglican Church, 26 Stavebank Road, Port Credit, the Rev. Canon Wm. Thomas officiating. Cremation has taken place. A further Celebration of Life in Ottawa with interment at Prestonvale Cemetery near Perth, Ont. with family present. A final Celebration is planned in Calgary later this summer for the Stewart Clan and friends in Western Canada.
