Our dad was born in northern Portugal on the border with Spain. He often walked across the border to buy olive oil and other items for his mom because groceries were less expensive. At age 14, he left for Lisbon to work in a pastry shop. This was 1940, WWII raged and Lisbon, the capital of a neutral Portugal, saw her share of allied and axis spies and refugees trying to flee the ravages of the war. In 1955 he came to Canada aboard the SS Rosa Star. Upon reaching Halifax, he set off on a journey that would see him travel Canada from coast to coast to coast. He worked in Kitimat, Prince Rupert, Edmonton, the Sept-Iles, among many other places. He worked as a logger, labourer and at the Alcan plant in Kitimat. In 1958 he married my mom and, in 1964, the family settled in Toronto where he began working as a delivery driver for Simpsons. Along with our mom, he raised us, always insisting on excellence at school so that we could have the opportunities he never did. Then came retirement, a return to Portugal to putter around the land and his grandchildren of whom he was very proud. We want to say "thanks dad" for all your support and, although your long journey is at an end, it was one filled with many different experiences. We will miss you. With love, John and Fernando
