Obituary for Theodore Miles "Ted" Fielder

Theodore Miles (Ted) Fielder (born March 22, 1931 Arlington, MA).

It is with heavy heart that we let you know of the passing of our dear father, grandfather, and husband. Ted Fielder passed peacefully the night of Sunday, May 10th at the Wenleigh Long Term Care nursing home in Mississauga. He passed in peace in his 89th year. We were blessed there was no covid in his nursing home, so they allowed us to go in one at a time to be with him and say our goodbyes. His beloved wife Sheila was able to do so and one of us was with him at his time of passing. We are so grateful he was not alone when he passed.

Dad was the beloved husband of Sheila Edith Carr (Shaw, North Bay), and the late Bette Jane Bauslaugh. Loving father of Laurie Craigen (Paul), Sherry Salvadori (Frank), Lesley Salvadori (Renato) of Mississauga, and Caralee McGowan (Jeffrey) of Milton. He was stepfather to Michael Carr, Nancy Richardson, Robert Carr of North Bay, and Laural Carr of Toronto. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Mitchell Aspinwall, Matthew Aspinwall, Adam Craigen, Michael Craigen, Emily Salvadori, Alexander Salvadori, Joseph Salvadori, Christopher Salvadori, and his step-grandchildren, Ashley Carr, Alexandra Carr-Setchell, Sarah Richardson, Cameron Richardson, Sheridan Carr and Harrison Carr.

Dad moved to Toronto in 1938 and became a Canadian citizen in 1941. He was educated at Upper Canada College and Ryerson University in Toronto and completed the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program.

From 1955 through 1972 he resided with his wife, Bette and their 4 daughters in Simcoe where he and his wife founded the Simcoe Broadcasting Company. They operated the local radio station there for 10 years. It was affectionately known throughout Norfolk County as Canada’s Finest Radio Station – call letters CFRS.

During 1973 he was Vice President Development of Cablecasting Limited in Toronto and then in 1974 he founded Cabler Limited and was its Chairman and CEO until his retirement in 1994.

During his years as Cabler Chairman he went on to found or co-found many cable television companies in Canada most notably Norwont Limited in Northwestern Ontario.

In 1981 he ventured into the rising telecommunications industry in the UK and founded/co-founded YorCan Communications which led to cable tv and business involvement in Cork Ireland, The City of York, in the UK and the Cayman Islands.

He retired in 1994 to look after our beloved mother, Bette, who predeceased him in 1996. He never let her side as she struggled and was eventually taken by ALS.

He was blessed to marry the second love of his life, Sheila Edith Carr, where the two lived in love for the last 25 years. He and Sheila spent much of their time travelling the world, gourmet cooking, finding time to enjoy a liberal wine cellar, and entertaining their family and many friends.

Dad was a big man in every way! He was a giant in our eyes. Not just standing six foot three and 200 pounds, but big in love and enthusiasm for life. He lived life to its fullest and never looked back. He took great pride in his four daughters and was always anxious to hear about his grandchildren whom he was equally proud of and whom he loved dearly.

We are so thankful to all the caregivers at the Wenleigh and to all the front-line workers around the world who are helping us, and our loved ones get through these difficult times.

Dad will be cremated with a Cemetery Monument Marker service at Mount Pleasant Cemeteries in Toronto to be held later.

Donations can be made to the Calvin Presbyterian Church in North Bay.
