Obituary for Owen Francis Mullin

Owen Francis Mullin
Mullin, Owen Francis
Passed away peacefully on Feb 10, 2019 at the age of 89 years. He is remembered with love by Dorothy his cherished wife of 67 years, daughter Kathryn and partner George Harmon, son Daniel and daughter-in-Law Janice Mullin, grandson Christopher and friend Beverly Marcinkiewicz, grandson Andrew and friend Dale Hewett and grandson Patrick.
Born in St. Peters Bay, PEI in 1929, Owen was the youngest of Daniel Mullin and Josephine Sharkey’s nine children. Owen left home for school at age 14 and graduated at 19 with a Bachelor of Science Degree from St Dunstan’s University, now known as UPEI. Following University, he joined the Canadian Army achieving the rank of Lieutenant, where he trained solders for the Korean War and commanded troops during the Winnipeg flood of 1950. Shortly after, he moved to Ontario where he met his future wife Dorothy, got married and started a business career at Ford Motor Company in the Engineering Division before venturing into politics.
First as a Town Councilor, then as Mayor of Burlington from 1961 to 1965, Owen’s efforts helped shaped the foundation and infrastructure of modern day Burlington. He moved hydro lines from the downtown and established landmarks like the City Hall and the lakefront parkland originally known as Centennial Park and now known as Spencer Smith Park.
Following politics, he went back to the corporate world working at Four Wheel Drive (FWD) in Kitchener, Thomas Built Bus in Woodstock and managing then owning Tek Plastic Signs in Mississauga.
He was a sports lover, especially his Blue Jays, played basketball, rugby and hockey during his college days. He dearly missed his golf and card playing pals at Credit Valley Golf Club.
Many thanks to the caring staff at Walden Circle and Credit Valley Hospital, especially caregiver Lynn who helped him through some tough times.
He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, past colleagues from business and politics and just about anyone that knew him.
