Obituary for Mervin Basil Chrysler

Mervin Basil Chrysler aka Swervin’ Mervin
May 28, 1924 to December 15, 2021

In the early hours of December 15th dad left us peacefully in his sleep with
family members by his side, to join his lifetime sweetheart Hilda (nee Widdifield).

Dad was born and raised on a farm near Charlton, Ontario. Craving adventure from a young age, at the earliest date possible he joined the RCAF and served overseas in WWII. He was a rear gunner on the Lancaster aircraft and was known as “Airman Chris”.

While stationed in England he received many letters, including ones from a special girl back home. He wrote to his mother telling her about Hilda’s letters and remarked “I think she’s swell”.

Upon his return home on June 23rd, 1945 Hilda, along with members of his family, met him at the CNE grounds in Toronto. Grandma remarked
in her journal “Merv took Hilda home”! Dad was somewhat of a hometown hero, a”big fish in a small pond”, but his eyes were only for mom. They were married in June 1946 and resided in Kirkland Lake, Bancroft and Peel Region. Mom passed in 2014 and dad eventually returned to Bancroft.

They had three daughters, Carolyn Chrysler, Marilee Head (Dave) and Kathleen Miller (Dennis), 6 grandchildren/step grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren/step grandchildren. Dad was highly respected and admired by virtually everyone. His calm demeanour and non-judgmental attitude was apparent to all. Only mom and dad could have raised three girls through their teenage years with never once raising their voices!

We know mom, dad’s 10 brothers and sisters and other family members were there to meet him on Wednesday morning. As one cousin remarked “I’m sure there’s an epic reunion party going on in heaven right now!”

Our sincere thanks to dad’s dedicated. caregivers Paula, Lee-Anne, Shari (Care Partners/LHIN) and Veronica (ParaMed). We also wish to express our gratitude to LHIN Co-ordinator Hillary, ParaMed Nurse Patty, Nurse Practitioner Clarissa, Val and Dr. Keila. Veterans Affairs Canada was instrumental with regard to ensuring dad’s every need was met; thanks to Karen for her amazing support.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for spring.

We love you and miss you dad.
