Obituary for Malek Hilali

Malek Hilali
December 6, 1946 – March 26, 2021

Malek Hilali passed away on Friday, March 26th holding the hand of his beloved wife Jon.
Malek was one of the best. Thoughtful, kind and generous to a fault. He was always ready with a smile and a story. He was incredibly curious, and loved to meet people and learn their stories. He surrounded himself with books, music and art. One of his most favourite things was to be at the dinner table with great food, wine and his cherished friends.
Malek was born in Meknes Morocco. After finishing University, he started his career as bank manager with Citibank in Casablanca. From there he went to work for the Canadian Embassy, and within a year Canada was his new home. In 1981 he met Jon van Splunteren – they soon married and began their life together.
Malek’s career in Canada was spent as Director of Sales in the travel and hospitality industries. He retired after a 5 year stint in Argentina where he was DiverseyLever’s Director of International Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Jon, her family in the Netherlands (where he was the One and Only Son- and Brother-in-law), his family in Morocco and Spain and his extended family of friends around the world.
In the last 15 years, MS compromised Malek’s mobility but did not stop him. The last 14 months were the most challenging which he faced with his usual grace and dignity.
At Malek’s request there will be no funeral and cremation has taken place. Please consider a donation to the MS Society, the Humane Society or a charity of your choice in his honour.
