Obituary for James Gordon Gingerich

James Gordon Gingerich
On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, James “Jim” Gordon Gingerich, loving husband to Sheena and proud father to Amy, passed away peacefully at the age of 69 after a long and courageous battle with lymphoma.

Jim was born in 1951 in Kitchener, Ontario, as the second of three boys to Emerson and Mayme Gingerich. He received his degree in Business Administration from Waterloo Lutheran University in 1973, graduating at the top of his class. After earning his MBA from McMaster University in 1976, Jim went on to work as a finance executive in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Texas, and eventually became one of the first holders of the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. On June 17, 1978, he married Jean “Sheena” Armstrong King. Together they raised one daughter, Amy.

After a successful 25-year career during which he served as Chief Financial Officer for several companies, Jim retired in 2001. He thoroughly enjoyed early retirement, and made great use of it to spend more time with the love of his life: golf. Playing about a hundred rounds a year, on one occasion he even managed to accomplish the elusive hole-in-one. Jim appreciated good single malt scotch and enjoyed travelling, once combining these two passions for a grand tour of Scotland’s distilleries. He was also very active in his community, using the experience he had gained in the corporate boardroom to serve as president of his condo board.

Jim is survived by his wife Sheena, his daughter Amy, his brother David, and many loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother George. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him for his intellect, his kind and generous spirit, and, not least, his love of telling a good corny joke — with the mischievous grin that would invariably follow.

Jim never liked to be the centre of attention, so per his wishes no service will be held. In keeping with his love of golf, his ashes will be spread in a place that was special to him, and private celebrations of Jim’s life will be held with friends and family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jim’s memory be made to Sunnybrook Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Lymphoma Canada, or a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Lisa Chodirker, Dr. Robert Kridel, and the doctors and staff at Sunnybrook Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Credit Valley Hospital for their care and compassion.
