Obituary for Danuta "Diane" Kapalowski

KAPALOWSKI, Danuta (Diane)

Our beloved Danuta “Diane” Kapalowski, passed away suddenly on September 15, 2022 at the age of 70 years at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Barbara O’Brien (James T.) and twin sister, Krystyna Donald (Rick) and her cousins Ziggy Gaweda (Nelle), Richard Gaweda (Jutta) and Grace Gault. Diane will be dearly missed by her God children, sisters-and brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, friends, relatives and neighbours.

Predeceased by her husband Michael Kapalowski, brother Stanley Gaweda (Linda), and more recently nephew Terry O’Brien Jr. and cousin John Gaweda (Jay) as well as her parents, Jadwiga and Stanislaw Gaweda and parents-in-law, Walter and Helena Kapalowski.

Diane was born in Dunville, Ontario, in 1952, 25 minutes ahead of her twin sister, Krys. She grew up in Toronto and attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic School. She was a fashionista in her teens, always sporting the latest hair-do and stylish outfit with matching purse and shoes. Her beauty caught the eye of Mike, who was working at the Brighton Theatre at the time and two years later they married, remaining together for 36 years before Mike’s passing. They spent much of their lives together in Mississauga.

Diane adored their fur babies, Smokey, Buddy and Sunny, all now bounding towards her from the Rainbow Bridge. She also “adopted” all family dogs as her own, asking about them as if they were human relatives.

While Diane worked a variety of interesting jobs, she became well known as the greeter and pizza lady at Costco. Her larger-than-life personality, humour and quick wit brought joy to so many. A favourite tale was when a man was checking out with nothing in his cart but a huge bag of dog food and a small bag of nuts. Without batting an eye, Diane said, “Oh, I see the mother-in-law is coming for dinner!”

Diane had a strong faith and a heart of gold. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, humour, big smile and hearty laugh, but most of all for the love and joy she gave so many. Diane truly lit up a room and was always the life of the party. She had a wonderful gift for making everyone feel special.

Funeral Mass will be held at Merciful Redeemer Catholic Church 2775 Erin Centre Blvd, Mississauga, ON on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 10:00 am. Burial at the Assumption Catholic Cemetery 6933 Tomken Rd, Mississauga, ON L5T 1N4.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Oakville & Milton Humane Society https://secure.omhs.ca/donations/2 or to your local SPCA.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Queen’s Avenue Retirement Residence for the love and support they gave Danuta during her stay, and also to the ICU staff at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care.
