Obituary for Carina Pontarini

Carina Pontarini passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, December 6th at home in the comforting presence of her family and loved ones.

Carina was born on January 13, 1924 in the small town of Caporiacco, Udine, Italy. She was the oldest sibling of Maria, and brothers Perino and Carlo, whom have all since passed. Carina was also predeceased by her beloved husband, Antonio.

In her late teens, she worked in Germany as a seasonal worker on sugar beet farms near the cities of Berlin and Stuttgart. After the war, at the age of 22, she relocated for work but this time in the textile factories of Switzerland from 1946 to 1953. Finally, after moving to Canada she settled into the role of wife & mother at home with her family.

Carina met her beloved future husband Antonio in October of 1943 at a harvest party in Udine. The night was the beginning of a long courtship between the two which would culminate in April of 1954, when Carina left Italy for Canada to marry Antonio (who had already immigrated to Canada) on May 29, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church, in Port Credit, Ontario.

Carina was a very gentle, kind soul with a positive outlook on life. She worked hard to support her family and was always there for anyone who needed her. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren. She set an example of kindness, respect & care for everyone and always welcomed visitors with warm meals including some family favourites such as chicken soup, deep dish pizza and her famous “Nonna cake”.

Carina was a positive influence in all of our lives and she will be sadly missed by her son John (Rose), daughter Sonya (Ivo), and son Frank. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Natalie, Amanda, Domenic, Elizabeth (Kordan), Laura, as well as her great granddaughter, Rebekah.

The family would like to recognize the support and love from her caregivers, Antonette, Joanne, Nida, and more recently Lena, Charlotte, and Marilou.

A private funeral will be held on Thursday December 9th. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: World Vision – https://donate.worldvision.ca/collections/all-gifts
